Our church's Covenant Instruction has prepared a whole new exciting programme for the months of August- December!

August: Contemporary Issues (Gift of speaking tongues, contemporary worship, dressing, COF)
September: Service, Work and Wealth (Biblical view of service, work and wealth)
October: Introduction to Worldviews (Secularism, Pragmatism, Relativism)
November: Historical Studies (History of christian church, Creeds and Confession, 3 Form of Unity)
December: Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (Feminism, Biblical vision of Complementarity, Preparation for true love)

I am sure the above topics are very relevant our lives as christian youths and young adults.These are real struggles and questions we often ask and would want to know more about. We thank God for the privilege of having elders/parents in the youth CI to teach us the word of the Lord. We acknowledge their effort and service to the Lord. As for us KSS youths, we must part our part by being supportive and ever curious in wanting to know more about God's words and His laws, and seek to lead a godly and true Christian life in today's difficult times.

Pastor Lau and Mr Lim, both recovering from major and minor operations respectively. Pastor Lau is at high risk of infection, so pray specifically for that. (also remember to hold your visits for now!

Nominees for church election. Many of them need a lot of guidance and wisdom in making their decisions, and as the church leadership is important for us too, we need to support them in prayer.

Church camp: registrations are open so do pray that the Lord may allow you to come, as well as work in the hearts of church members to sign up too. It’ll be good spiritual refreshment!

The BMT army boys, Jason and Timothy. They still need much encouragement! Pray for perseverance and strength, physically, mentally and especially spiritually.

JC students, who are stressed out by workload. May God grant them faith to commit all to Him.

University students who are currently having exams, that they will know how to do all for God’s glory alone. And for those that are done with exams, that they may use their time wisely for Him too.

Poly students who are starting a new term again. May God help them to manage their time as work comes in again.

Those who are taking confession/baptism. (7 from KSS!) Thank God for working in each of their hearts, and for using them as testimonies and unto His glory. Let us, as witnesses, also remember our own relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord. Praise be to God!

For those who are working, that they may always bear a good testimony for Your name sake.
For those who are studying, that they may we able to cope with all the upcoming tests and datelines.
For those in army, especially Tim Quek who is currently confine, that they may persevere through the tough training programmes
For those who received their Alevels results, that they may entrust their universities applications in Your hands; For those who are still undecided, that they may place all decisions-making and uncertainties in prayers.

Pastor Lau will be going through a medical examination these days. Pray for him and his family for faith in God's perfect will regarding a double transplant, and trust as well.
For Mr Lim and his wife and son. That God may sustain them and keep them while Mr Lim is in hospital
O level exams will begin next week. Pray that God may grant Joseph, Joanne, Benjamin serenity and confidence in Him alone. Also that they will study and do their exams for God's glory.
Uni students, for good time management and wisdom in prioritising their project meetings, essays, studying, and spiritual life as they reach mid-semester.
Pray for God's continuing work in the youth ministries. That He may grant the committees discernment and committment too.

Pray for the sustaining hand of the Lord on the health of Pastor Thomas and Pastor Lau. Also pray for their families as they go through this difficult time.

Thank God for providing chalets for KSS Retreat. The CONFIRMED dates for KSS Retreat will be from the 21st of Dec(Sunday afternoon) to 24th (Wednesday morning). Transport will be provided from church to the campsite at Aloha Changi. More details will be out soon!

Pray for those having exams (O Levels, promos, A Levels, PSLE, etc) as they prepare for their papers.

FERC Song Service

Dear all,

The KSS/KS Committees are planning a song service for the church on the 31 August 2008. It will take place after evening service for about an hour or so.

The first song service will be a precursor to regular song services in FERC (Lord willingly). Our intention for this is to have a time of praising God together through singing. Moreover, the congregation will also learn new songs from HOF/HOP/Psalter, as we are FARRRR from knowing every single song in there. Occasionally, the youth choir will present a couple of songs to the congregation as a form of encouragement.

For those who attended CI class on Sunday, you would have heard the announcement on the recruitment of singers for the choir. So, to all youths from KS/KSS, here's an invitation to all of you to join us in the choir. You don't have to be great at music/singing, you just have to have a heart for praising God, and the patience to learn new songs.

P.S. Currently, the choir is learning the song "He is no fool" adapted from the missionary, Jim Elliot's words.

The Legacy Of Babel: The King Over All Nations

Most of us have heard of the story of the Tower of Babel. In it was the first recorded instance of a massive concerted effort at rebelling against the Lord God. The builders sought to rival the Most High by constructing a monument to their name, displaying their pride by desiring to give themselves a great place in history. In addition, the people refused to be scattered across the continents, despite the commandment to 'replenish the earth'.

As the construction of the tower proceeded, God saw that the people were not about to repent of their work, and judged them. God did not destroy the builders, but in his wisdom struck their unity, that their wicked ambitions may be disrupted. With new languages, people could no longer comprehend what a person from another community was speaking. As a result, not only was the tower abandoned, but the people of the earth finally moved off in groups to colonise new areas and develop civilisations. By this impact the nations were created, and God's sovereignty demonstrated.

Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. (Genesis 9:1b)

Such was the first line of command given to Noah and his children. This was indeed partly accomplished, for the generations of people recorded in the chapter 10 show the people had grown in number. However, simply producing much progeny serves little to fulfil this command if all the generations remained in one location (that is, a valley by the name of Shinar). Disobedience was then found in the hearts of men when they desired a unity that would prevent them from distributing themselves across the post-flood world.

This idea of unity was probably compounded by the actions of Nimrod, a mighty man who went forth and became the ruler of the first kingdom after the flood, either by politics or conquest. In order to maintain his seat of power, he would have gathered the peoples to his land of Shinar, while promising them safety from beasts. There, the Lord would gradually be forgotten while they sought to feed their pride, in councils devising a plan to prevent their scattering. Yet, despite that, the Lord confounded their tongues, forcing them to scatter in a harsher manner than Noah might have intended.

In our times, we as Christians have oft behaved like unto these people. Although we have no empty planet to repopulate, we are commissioned to go forth into all the earth, preaching Christ. Yet, enjoying the comforts of present fellowship, most of us feel little compulsion to spread the light to our non-christian friends. Now the history of the young church has seen it grow quickly as the early saints were persecuted and thus scattered - must God so send tribulation so that we may be kept from slumber? Indeed, it will happen before the last elect is gathered, but let us be ready and working in obedience.

Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city. (Psalm 55:9)

Alright, the above verse is somewhat taken out of context, but it was written by David in reference to what the Lord had once done at Babel. Doubtless the wicked pride of men in the city would lead them to work further wickedness, without the fear of the Lord. The increasing evil would then threaten to wipe the elect from off the earth, thereby breaking the Lord's promise of the Seed of the woman. To preserve his people, and yet quickly replenish the earth, the Lord chose not to destroy all the builders, but by confounding their speech forced them to stop work.

Thus when the people realized that they could no more work together as one, they gathered into their families and departed for the land which was allotted them. Most probably Noah had previously given his descendants the directions they should move towards, so that they may claim land for themselves. This was finally obeyed, as in a measure of mercy the Lord made the language of a man to be the same as his relations and generations, allowing them to maintain a patriarchal format of leadership instead of falling into anarchy. Thus were the origins of the nations, as each tribe moved to occupy their territory.

Now were the peoples not only separated physically one from another, but effective communication was sundered for a long time, and only in our years have been restored somewhat through globalisation. Language is indeed one of the greatest problems one faces when spreading the gospel: one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit was that of tongues, in order to overcome the language barriers. By this were many gentiles brought to Christ, as recorded in the New Testament. Although we are no longer given divine means of circumventing the confounding of languages at Babel, let those of us who are given the talent seek to learn other languages.

To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, now and forever. (Jude 1:25)

By the impact of the punishment wrought at Babel God shows he is lord over the nations, for by this act were the nations formed. All the children of man lost their former languages, and were given new ones. We can presume that the faithful line of Eber were not partakers of the iniquity that was at Babel, and therefore retained the original language (and hence the proper knowledge of God was lost to the other nations). Nonetheless, the point is that ungodly unity was confounded, and the Lord's will done.

It is also worth noting that Nimrod's attempt at world domination was cast down by the Lord. Instead of setting a name for himself through a tower, the site of the construct was named babel (confusion): a humiliating example to those who would rise in pride against the Lord. Since then, Jehovah was made known to the remnant, maintaining his covenant with Israel. Despite scattering the peoples, the Lord held sway over the nations, using them to punish the wicked, or allowing Israel to conquer them: many examples were recorded in the Old Testament.

Though the scattering at Babel has increased the difficulty of spreading the gospel unto all the elect, with Christ's resurrection and ascension he claimed the title of King of kings and Lord of lords; and all power was given him in heaven and in earth. Therefore we should not fear to serve such a King. When Christ returns to judge the world, elect from all nations will gathered together from the ends of the earth, fulfilling the legacy of Babel.

Main Threat to Christianity: Gay Rights

The biggest challenge facing Christianity these days is arguably that of gay rights. It has grown in extent and influence over the years, gaining supporters in droves. This movement is clearly wrong on Scriptural grounds.

Proponents of gay rights argue that the right for same-sex marriages is another essential human civil right, on an equal footing with the right to freedom of speech. They further base their claims upon genetics, arguing that homosexuality is part of the genetic makeup.

Obviously, their arguments are flawed.

However, many of us Singaporeans are not active enough in our opposition to this movement. We are passive, not grasping the full extent of this threat to Scriptural authority.

Let us be warned that this threat is both very grave and very real.
We are facing, and will have to continue to deal with, the threat of gay rights in our lifetimes.

The reality is that due to the gay rights movement, you will have to deal with it in your daily lives.

Some possible situations you might find yourself in:

As a businessman, would you engage in business with a company that promotes gay rights?

Perhaps you are the CEO of a food and beverage enterprise. A well-established company that promotes the gay and lesbian movement seeks to engage you to either be a sponsor of an event or cater food and beverages for the event. Would you engage in business with the company?

As a teacher, would you teach in a school that allows homosexuality?

Perhaps you are a teacher. Your school's board of governors has just decided to take a neutral stand on homosexuality. They ask teachers not to discriminate against homosexuals. The science syllabus teaches that homosexuality is a genetic variant. Do you continue teaching there?

As a doctor, would you prescribe Viagra for gays?

Perhaps you are a general practitioner. A gay man indicates erectile dysfunction in his intimate acts with another man. Viagra is the correct prescription. Do you prescribe the medication?

Allow me to illustrate the extent of the spread of gay rights around the world.

Even in a traditionally conservative Christian nation such as the United States, an increasing proportion of the population has begun to accept gays as part of their culture, and gay rights as another civil right entitled to all human beings. Democratic presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both endorse same-sex marriages.

I append an article reporting on the judiciary of California overturning a ban on same-sex marriages, thus making it legal for gays and lesbians to wed in the most populous, and influential, state in the USA.

(SAN FRANCISCO) — In a monumental victory for the gay rights movement, the California Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage Thursday in a ruling that would allow same-sex couples in the nation's biggest state to tie the knot.

Domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage, the justices ruled 4-3 in striking down the ban.

Outside the courthouse, gay marriage supporters cried and cheered as the news spread.
Jeanie Rizzo, one of the plaintiffs, called Pali Cooper, her partner of 19 years, and asked, "Pali, will you marry me?"

"This is a very historic day. This is just such freedom for us," Rizzo said. "This is a message that says all of us are entitled to human dignity."

In the Castro, historically a center of the gay community in San Francisco, Tim Oviatt started crying while watching the news on TV. "I've been waiting for this all my life," he said. "This is a life-affirming moment."

The city of San Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples and gay rights groups sued in March 2004 after the court halted the monthlong wedding march that took place when Mayor Gavin Newsom opened the doors of City Hall to same-sex marriages. "Today the California Supreme Court took a giant leap to ensure that everybody — not just in the state of California, but throughout the country — will have equal treatment under the law," said City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who argued the case for San Francisco.

The challenge for gay rights advocates, however, is not over.

A coalition of religious and social conservative groups is attempting to put a measure on the November ballot that would enshrine laws banning gay marriage in the state constitution.
The Secretary of State is expected to rule by the end of June whether the sponsors gathered enough signatures to qualify the marriage amendment, similar to ones enacted in 26 other states.

If voters pass the measure in November, it would trump the court's decision.

California already offers same-sex couples who register as domestic partners the same legal rights and responsibilities as married spouses, including the right to divorce and to sue for child support.

But, "Our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation," Chief Justice Ron George wrote for the court's majority, which also included Justices Joyce Kennard, Kathryn Werdegar and Carlos Moreno.

In a dissenting opinion, Justice Marvin Baxter agreed with many arguments of the majority but said the court overstepped its authority. Changes to marriage laws should be decided by the voters, Baxter wrote. Justices Ming Chin and Carol Corrigan also dissented.

The conservative Alliance Defense Fund says it plans to ask the justices for a stay of their decision until after the fall election, said Glen Lavey, senior counsel for the group.

There is an intensifying controversy in the church all over the world regarding the age of the earth. For the first 18 centuries of church history the almost universal belief of Christians was that God created the world in six literal days roughly 4,000 years before Christ and destroyed the world with a global Flood at the time of Noah.

But about 200 years ago some scientists developed new theories of earth history, which proposed that the earth and universe are millions of years old. Over the past 200 years Christian leaders have made various attempts to fit the millions of years into the Bible. These include the day-age view, gap theory, local flood view, framework hypothesis, theistic evolution, progressive creation, etc.

A growing number of Christians (now called young-earth creationists), including many scientists, hold to the traditional view, believing it to be the only view that is truly faithful to Scripture and that fits the scientific evidence far better than the reigning old-earth evolutionary theory.

Many Christians say that the age of the earth is an unimportant and divisive side-issue that hinders the proclamation of the gospel. But is that really the case? AiG and many other creationist organizations think not.

In this short article, we want to introduce you to some of the reasons we think that Christians cannot accept the millions of years, without doing great damage to the church and her witness in the world. We hope that it will help you think more carefully about this subject and will motivate you to dig deeper into the excellent resources recommended at the end, which thoroughly defend the points made here.

1. The Bible clearly teaches that God created in six literal, 24-hour days a few thousand years ago.

The Hebrew word for day in Genesis 1 is yom. In the vast majority of its uses in the Old Testament (OT) it means a literal day and where it doesn’t the context makes this clear.

Similarly, the context of Genesis 1 clearly shows that the days of creation were literal days. First, yom is defined the first time it is used in the Bible (Gen. 1:4–5) in its two literal senses: the light portion of the light/dark cycle and the whole light/dark cycle. Second, yom is used with “evening” and “morning.” Everywhere these two words are used in the OT, either together or separately and with or without yom in the context, they always mean a literal evening or morning of a literal day. Third, yom is modified with a number: one day, second day, third day, etc., which everywhere else in the Old Testament indicates literal days. Fourth, yom is defined literally in Gen. 1:14 in relation to the heavenly bodies.

That these creation days happened only about 6,000 years ago is clear from the genealogies of Gen. 5 and 11 (which give very detailed chronological information, unlike the clearly abbreviated genealogy in Matt. 1) and other chronological information in the Bible.

2. Exodus 20:11 blocks all attempts to fit millions of years into Genesis 1.

This verse gives the reason for God’s command to Israel to work six days and then take a Sabbath rest. Yom is used in both parts of the commandment. If God meant that the Jews were to work six days because He created over six long periods of time, He could have said that using one of three indefinite Hebrew time words. He chose the only word that means a literal day and the Jews understood it literally (until the idea of million of years developed in the early 19th century). For this reason, the day-age view or framework hypothesis must be rejected. The gap theory or any other attempt to put millions of years before the six days are also false, because God says that in six days He made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. So He made everything in those six literal days and nothing before the first day.

3. Noah’s Flood washes away millions of years.

The evidence in Gen. 6–9 for a global catastrophic flood is overwhelming. For example, the Flood was intended to destroy not only all sinful people but also all land animals and birds and the surface of the earth, which only a global flood could accomplish. The Ark’s purpose was to save two of every kind of land animal and bird to repopulate the earth after the flood. The Ark was totally unnecessary, if the Flood was local. People, animals and birds could have migrated out of the flood zone before it occurred or the zone could have been populated from creatures outside the area after the Flood. The catastrophic nature is seen in the nonstop rain for at least 40 days, which would have produced massive erosion, mud slides, hurricanes, etc. The Hebrew words translated “the fountains of the great deep burst open” (Gen. 7:11) clearly point to tectonic rupturing of the earth’s surface in many places for 150 days, resulting in volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. Noah’s Flood would produce exactly the kind of complex geological record we see today worldwide: thousands of feet of sediments clearly deposited by water and later hardened into rock and containing billions of fossils. If the year-long Flood is responsible for most of the rock layers and fossils, then those rocks and fossils cannot represent the history of the earth over millions of years, as evolutionists claim.

4. Jesus was a young-earth creationist.

Jesus consistently treated the miracle accounts of the Old Testament as straightforward, truthful, historical accounts (e.g., creation of Adam, Noah and the Flood, Lot and his wife in Sodom, Moses and the manna, and Jonah in the fish). He continually affirmed the authority of Scripture over men’s ideas and traditions (Matt. 15:1–9). In Mark 10:6 we have the clearest (but not the only) statement showing that Jesus was a young-earth creationist. He states that Adam and Eve were at the beginning of creation, not billions of years after the beginning, as would be the case if the universe was really billions of years old. So, if Jesus was a young-earth creationist, then how can His faithful followers have any other view?

5. Belief in millions of years undermines the Bible’s teaching on death and on the character of God.

Genesis 1 says six times that God called the creation “good” and when He finished creation on Day 6 He called everything “very good.” Man and animals and birds were originally vegetarian (Gen. 1:29–30, plants are not “living creatures,” as people and animals are, according Scripture). But Adam and Eve sinned, resulting in the judgment of God on the whole creation. Instantly Adam and Eve died spiritually, and after God’s curse they began to die physically. The serpent and Eve were changed physically and the ground itself was cursed (Gen. 3:14–19). The whole creation now groans in bondage to corruption waiting for the final redemption of Christians (Rom. 8:19–25) when we will see the restoration of all things (Acts 3:21, Col. 1:20) to a state similar to the pre-Fall world, when there will be no more carnivore behavior (Isa. 11:6–9) and no disease, suffering or death (Rev. 21:3–5) because there will be no more Curse (Rev. 22:3). To accept millions of years of animal death before the creation and Fall of man contradicts and destroys the Bible’s teaching on death and the full redemptive work of Christ. It also makes God into a bumbling, cruel creator who uses (or can’t prevent) disease, natural disasters and extinctions to mar His creative work, without any moral cause, but calls it all “very good.”

6. The idea of millions of years did not come from the scientific facts.

It was developed by deistic and atheistic geologists in the late 18th and early 19th century. These men used anti-biblical philosophical and religious assumptions to interpret the geological observations in a way that plainly contradicted the biblical account of creation, the Flood and the age of the earth. Most church leaders and scholars quickly compromised using the gap theory, day-age view, local flood view, etc. to try to fit “deep time” into the Bible. But they did not understand the geological arguments nor did they defend their views by careful Bible study. The “deep time” idea flows out of naturalistic assumptions, not scientific observations.

7. Radiometric dating methods do not prove millions of years.

Radiometric dating was not developed until the early 20th century, by which time the whole world had already accepted the millions of years. For many years creation scientists have cited many examples in the published scientific literature of these dating methods clearly giving erroneous dates (e.g., a date of millions of years for lava flows that occurred in the past few hundred years or even decades). In recent years creationists in the “RATE project” have done experimental, theoretical and field research to uncover more such evidence (e.g., diamonds and coal, which the evolutionists say are millions of years old, were dated by carbon-14 to be only thousands of years old) and to show that decay rates were orders of magnitude faster in the past, which shrinks the millions of years dates to thousands of years, confirming the Bible.

Conclusion

These are just some of the reasons why we believe that the Bible is giving us the true history of the creation. God’s Word must be the final authority on all matters about which it speaks: not just the moral and spiritual matters, but also its teachings that bear on history, archeology and science.

What is at stake here is the authority of Scripture, the character of God, the doctrine of death and the very foundation of the gospel. If the early chapters of Genesis are not true literal history, then faith in the rest of the Bible is undermined, including its teaching about salvation and morality. I urge you to examine carefully the resources [available at AiG]. The health of the church, the effectiveness of her mission to a lost world and the glory of God are at stake.

A converted Hindu woman had suffered much at the hands of her unsaved relatives. One day a missionary asked her, "When your husband is angry and persecutes you, what do you do?" The Hindu woman replied, "I just cook the food better and sweep the floor a little cleaner. When he speaks unkindly, I answer him mildly, trying to show him in every way that when I became a Christian, I also became a better wife." Although that husband had resisted all the efforts of the missionaries, he could not resist the sweet silence of his Christian wife. The Holy Spirit used her to win him to Christ.

How do you react when you meet antagonism? When you are mistreated or wrongly accused, do you harbor resentment or seek revenge? Do you attempt to retaliate or verbally abuse those who have abused you?

Jesus had been led away to the high priest. His agony in the garden had been interrupted by His betrayal. To make matters worse, His primary disciple, the Apostle Peter, had denied Him three times. Our Lord had endured both physical and verbal abuse all night long. "And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate" (Mark 15:1). As the Sanhedrin gathered early on the morning of Jesus' crucifixion, they attempted to make the trial official. Yet their single purpose was "to put Him to death" (Matthew 27:1).

Jesus was falsely arraigned, falsely accused, and falsely abused. Yet to all of the trumped-up charges, to all of this pseudo evidence, our Lord made no reply. When the chief priests continued to accuse Him falsely of many things, Mark records that the Lord Jesus answered nothing. So uncharacteristic was it for a person falsely accused not to rise to His own defense that Pilate asked in astonishment, "Answerest Thou nothing?" But the narrative repeats, "Jesus yet answered nothing." It was nothing short of remarkable that Jesus would not retaliate or lash out against those who had treated Him so cruelly and unjustly.

A young sergeant was serving the British army in Egypt under the Highland Regiment. This soldier was an effervescent and shining Christian. When he was asked how he came to know the Lord Jesus as Savior, he recounted his conversion by saying, "There is a private in this company who was converted in Malta before the regiment came to Egypt. We gave that fellow an awful time. On one terrible night he came in very tired and wet. But before getting into bed, he knelt down to pray. My boots were soaked with water and covered with mud, and I let him have it with one on the side of his head, and I struck him with the second on the other side. But he just went on praying. The next morning I found those boots beautifully polished and standing by the side of my bed. That was his reply to me, and it just broke my heart. I was saved that day."

Our response to those who lie against us must never be to lash out against them. As we arise early in the morning, perhaps after a day in which our character has been slandered and our conduct has been slashed, we must arise with a commitment to live a life like the Lord Jesus who, when He was reviled, reviled not again. Only then will we live happily in a world filled with unhappy people.

the Decline of Man

Prehistoric - we so often hear this term being used to describe very old objects or a time very long ago. Yet, prehistory never existed, because ever since God created the Earth and instituted the concept of time, there was history. What was before time cannot be comprehended or described as 'prehistory' simply because the premise of time cannot be applied to a timeless dimension.

How then do we usually imagine our most ancient ancestors to be? Stupid lumbering (albeit muscular) bipeds? This secular view is wrong, yet it is so widespread that we tend to think of ourselves as the apex of human history, being more advanced than prehistoric Man. No, Man was never primitive. While it is true that we are technologically advanced compared to our ancestors, we can't really say that society as a whole has developed positively (unlike what evolutionists would have us think).

Let us examine things from the very start. God created Man good and in His image. Certainly this would entail gifting humanity with much intelligence, strength, and a good set of moral principles. However Man rebelled and sinned against God, invoking a curse from God upon Creation. Thereafter, Man regressed from his former noble position. With this in mind, it is easy to see why Man would have lost much of the mentioned gifts. This is how that occurred:

Intelligence. We always see our generation as the most intelligent, having amassed knowledge from across centuries. This is far from reality. Students may do well in tests, but rarely are they shown to be more effective workers. Often what we learn in school is forgotten in a couple of years. In all, people nowadays tend to have a desperate lack of common sense and memory prowess. Sure, we live in modern buildings and use computers, but what if electricity wasn't available to us? Our form of networking would fall apart, and humanity as a whole.

Meanwhile, nobody has figured how the pyramids were built. Or the other massive construction projects carried out about the world by the ancients. Also, the extensive use of traditional medicine in the past underlies their knowledge of herbs and body anatomy then, while their astronomy and navigation skills were impressive too. The ancients' word-of-mouth communication must also be accurate, for writings wasn't easily reproduced. For example, we can't even get a chinese whisper past a chain of 20 people, while Moses had to command a million men!
Physical status. Humans aren't really living longer. Instead, health care has only managed to restore the 70-80 life expectancy indicated by the Bible. Conversely, it is recorded that people before the flood regularly lived centuries, though that age depreciated to 120 soon after the flood and later to 70-80. In addition, genetic defects accumulate with each generation, while genes are lost through genetic shift. This helps to show that since the Fall, each generation displays signs of aging more quickly.

As to ability, it's easy for us to see that our physical conditioning disappears rapidly without frequent training. On the contrary, athletes in the past took part in sports much more grueling than ours, probably displaying greater strength and skill. Our senses have probably degraded too. Many of us are myopic, but some of our ancestors who did cave-painting drew precise images in a dim cave! The other senses of hearing and smelling have also degraded considerably, where we sometimes cannot differentiate notes or scents.
Morality. Do we often bear the notion that the ancients were barbarians? That is the product of evolution teaching that human society has progressed, away from a dog eat dog world into mutually benefiting communities. Yet that doesn't hold true: social cohesion is falling apart, especially in the face of greater 'freedom of speech/expression', where people plainly declare they don't agree.

Little needs to be said about morality. Humans, ever since the Fall, have always been prone to sinning. A while before the Flood people were already carrying out violence. We think we have laws now which reduce crime, making us a better society than centuries ago, but a major problem now is the legalisation of sins. Murders still exist today, although they are often more subtle in the form of abortion and exploitation. No, mankind has not improved; 'loving thy neighbour' hardly exists beyond religious ideals.

Is there evidence for the highly advanced state of Man in the earliest days? Well, we do have some archaeological discoveries, though they are often eclipsed by the latest news in ape-to-man models. Aside from all that, we have the Bible (which is often disregarded as a credible source by some scientific communities). It is recorded in Genesis 3 that Cain's descendants were masters of different trades, so soon after the Earth came into existence. Doubtless the other people of the Earth shared in their technological advancements, practising animal husbandry, music and metallurgy.

Despite all the gifts God bestowed upon his special creation, mankind turned them to corrupt use, necessitating the cleansing Flood. After the Flood, decline continued. The reason why mankind perceive our ancestors to be less advanced is because we take too much pride in our discoveries and in ourselves. In the same way mankind tries to put themselves on the same level as God. The first time was in the Garden of Eden, when Eve was convinced the fruit would make people as gods. Then there was the Tower of Babel, where people sought to equal heaven. Each time God dealt out punishment. In modern times, many declare 'there is no god', effectively seeing themselves as the ultimate authority. The Lord God does not take this lightly: one day the earth will be consumed by fervent heat.

Man has lost immortality by the Fall, then brought about a catastrophic global Flood due to habitual violence. Later, the peoples of the Earth were scattered and technologically retarded by the judgement passed upon the Tower of Babel. Only in recent times have we regained the technology possessed by the ancients. Whether we have surpassed it remains in doubt, for we have traded off much experiencial knowledge in medicine, navigation, and forcasting. Neither do we match the ancients in lifespan, wits, strength, and skill. Yet, none of these talents matter if we do not see Christ Jesus as the salvation sent to Man. Our sins will bring judgement upon us, and only God can provide a way out.

Hear therefore the cry of Jeremiah in Lamentations 5:21. Though we may never reclaim the physical prosperity of mankind before the Fall, let us pray that God turn us to Him, that we may lay claim to the blood of Christ and be alongside his first children - the few ancients who stayed faithful.

Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.

Putting On The Mind Of Christ

"Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:2)"

Last week, we considered: "What Would Jesus Think?" He is Lord of our hearts, minds and strength, the supreme model for our thinking, feeling and doing habits. We looked at examples of how Jesus used His mind in the Gospels and see how that is relevant to our own day.

Let us follow His example in thinking properly and integrate our faith in each area of study and research and work to the glory of God in universities, campuses, research institutions, science laboratory, computer labs, hospitals and lecture halls.

What are the areas where our Christian Faith integrate with work/world?

There are different areas of integration: (JP Moreland "Loving God With All Your Mind")

1) What are the ethical issues involved in my vocation or study? As a businessperson, what is my beliefs of corporate moral responsibility? Or as a law student, what is justice?

2) What does my field say about what is real or not, what is true or false? As a teacher, psychologist or counsellor, should I believe that the mind is really the brain or morality is determined by genes? How should a scientist view evolution?

3) What does my field say about the nature and limits of knowledge? Should I assume that only what can be measured and tested in an experiment is genuine knowledge?

4) Are there specific virtues or qualities especially relevant to your work or study?

How Do We Develop A Christian Mind?

When was the last time you were encouraged to think Christianly as a student of law, business, information technology or education? We need to develop a Christian mindset.

A Christian mind is not simply thinking about topics like prayer, worship, bible study nor just abstract intellectualism. Os Guiness put it this way:

"Thinking Christianly is thinking by Christians about anything and everything in a consistently Christian way – in a manner which is shaped, directed, and restrained by the truth of God's Word and God's Spirit…"and "what we do with what we know is what Christian knowing is all about."

Consciously or not, all of us have some basic ideas about how to look at life and the world that guide our actions like glasses or contact lenses through which we see everything else. "A worldview is, first of all, an explanation and interpretation of the world and second, an application of this view to life. In simpler terms, our worldview is a view of the world and a view for the world." (Phillips and Brown) A good worldview answers four big questions of life:

· Where do we come from? (Question Of Origin)
· Who are we? (Question Of Identity)
· Why are we here? (Question Of Purpose)
· Where are we going? (Question Of Destiny)

To build bridges across different cultures, Christians need to learn how to be bilingual, translating the perspective of the gospel into a language understood by our culture. We learn to connect God's Word with God's world. How do I do it?

The Creation: In Genesis, God created humans and the universe out of nothing. Human lives are sacred and valuable because we bear God's image. We are not just biological machines.Our first job description: "Be fruitful and multiply (develop the social world: build families, churches, schools, cities, governments, laws) and fill the earth and subdue it (harness the natural world and care for creation: plant crops, build bridges, design computers)". The Cultural Mandate sets out our original purpose to create cultures, build civilizations. "It's only Eden if you have a gardener. Without one, what you have is Amazon jungle". Work is meaningful and fulfilling.

The Fall: However humanity has rebelled against God and fallen into sin. A radical corruption happens to the entire creation, shattering our relationships with God, environment, animals, each other and alienation from our own selves. Now we determine the knowledge of good and evil with man at the center, without reference from the Creator. In disobedience, we have made physical and mental idols to rule our own lives. The result is pain, sorrow, alienation, conflict, violence, self-centeredness and death. Even work becomes frustrating and burdensome.

The Redemption: At the cross and resurrection, Christ has redeemed our souls and reconciled all of creation to Himself. The earth we are living in is not abandoned, but renewed at the consummation of history when Christ returns – new heaven, new earth, resurrected bodies. We, citizens of the Kingdom, should be living according to the way of Jesus, caring for the ecosystem in ways that honor the Creator. Although the complete removal of sin is yet to come, we can join Jesus in reversing the effects of sin and letting His kingdom come, His will be done on earth.

Conclusion:

Lesslie Newbigin laid this challenge: Laypeople in every facet of life – media, politics, business, education and others – should be enabled to challenge the prevailing assumptions of society in light of the gospel. His faithful servant Pastor Lau is having physical difficulties due to his advancing age and the frailties of the human body. Do pray for comfort for both himself and his family.
Students throughout the Kingdom are stressed out by examinations. Pray for wisdom for the students so that they may properly manage their time and do their best in their studies.
Prospective undergraduates are delilberating over their university courses. This is indeed an important crossroads in their lives. Pray for wisdom that they might make the right decisions.
Valiant soldiers of the land, notably Justin, Jeremy, Matthias, Aaron and Noah are serving their Nation proudly. Pray for God's watchful arm over them.
Veteran soldier 3SG Joel is approaching the end of his term in National Service. Thank God for his faithful service and for carrying him thorough his term of service. May his experiences have enriched him both character-wise and spiritually.

Lungless Frog

Here's an article I've typed commenting on a Lungless Frogs article in the Straits Times today, on page H3. If you find it useful, do reproduce this article, whether in e-mail, blog, or otherwise. I lay no copyright to my work, except that my name be quoted (so arguments can be directed to me).

On April 10, there was an article in the Straits Times describing the discovery of a species of lungless frogs (Barbourula kalimantanensis) by an NUS research team. While there are 3 other lungless vertebrates already discovered, this is the first recorded frog species to lack such organs.

Supposedly the lack of lungs benefited the frog in that a source of buoyancy (air in lungs) was removed. This allows the frog to remain on the riverbed in turbulent currents. In addition, the relative 'flatness' of the frog gave it more surface area through which gas exchange could occur, to compensate for it's lunglessness.

Though as interesting as this unique creature is, it was the attached evolutionary tag that prompted me to type this post, for the frog was described as making evolutionary history (being an unusual specimen). That is most disturbing: it shows that the ideas of evolution have so contaminated biology that even a new discovery is said to display evolution. Undoubtedly there are possible explanations to the creature's apparent 'disability', without having to resort to evolution, as described below.

The frog was intelligently designed to survive in a particular habitat (one of cold oxygen-rich but fast waters).
The frog's ancestors have indeed undergone mutation(s) such that their DNA is no longer able to cause lungs to develop. However this is a degenerative loss of genetic information, although it would seem beneficial to the frog in it's environment. This adaptation cannot amount to evolution as nothing new has been developed, instead an organ has been 'amputated' genetically.

As may be drawn from the presentation of information in the article, the development of the frog was factually described as a product of evolution. Therein lies the danger; giving the process of evolution as the reason behind the frog's existence so very subtly changes people's worldviews - one of an eons-old earth. This practically undermines a person's belief in God, as attributing the uniqueness of a creature to anything but God is denying his power in Creation.

The lesson here is that a person ought to be discerning: even a regulated media such as Singapore's may well publish inaccurate articles, claiming the unverified to be true. Also, it shows persecution still exists despite our relative peace, taking the form of the concept of a world without God.

On the bright side, the scientists still seem to somewhat recognise their (and our) position as stewards of the earth. Conservative measures are likely to be carried out in the endangered frog's habitat soon. Despite that, I am still reminded of a particular verse, Romans 8:22 "For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. " Verily from the fall of man onwards sin plagues so many things. Regarding this issue of a lungless frog, human weakness can be seen in the following:

The exploitation of the environment (mining and deforestation) leading to a decrease in habitat area of the frog.
The deceived, God-rejecting, mindset of the scientists.
The ease at which ideas of evolution and eons is published as fact.
If the frog is a product of mutation, that such degeneration occurs.

Prayer items for the week

Pray for Uncle Namtuck, Auntie Lydia and Josiah that they will look to God for comfort in their recent bereavement.
Pray for the church camp committee, that God will grant them the wisdom and efficiency needed for the planning and organisation, or any hiccups in the process.
Pray for the upcoming election, for suitable men to serve. May God show them His will.
Thank God for the KSS Regional Cells, which have been attended quite consistently so far. May He sustain in us the desire to learn and understand.
Thank God for newcomers/visitors among us. Pray that our youths will be hospitable and provide sweet fellowship, and for good testimonies.
Pray for the army guys, Jeremy, Matthias, Aaron, Noah, that they will continually seek Him who is faithful and able especially in tough times, when dealing with difficult people or circumstances.
Pray for those who are far from God, that He will be gracious to bring them back safely.
Pray for students (uni, JC, poly) to have strength and focus. To study for God's glory alone.
For those overseas, to be good testimonies for God wherever they may be, and for their safety in God's hands.

Street Evangelism

Those who came for Good Friday Street Evangelism, thanks to God for working in you all a desire to do His Work!

I'm sure each of us learnt something new from this first experience in "talking to strangers". The harvest is plenty, the labourers are few. Let us not allow zeal to abate, but to carry on in faith. It surely was great to see both young and old overcoming inertia and fear, trusting in God to provide wisdom and the right words. Truly He does not abandon us especially in times of doubt.

On behalf of the Youth Evangelism Committee, I would like to remind those who came for Street E to do a short write-up/reflection on lessons learnt, challenges faced and how you've overcome them (if you have). You can pass it to Justus or me on Sunday.

Thanks everyone, and remember to pray for those we spoke to, that God might work in them after they've read the tract. Apostle Paul's prayers brimmed with concern for God's people and this is an example for us to pray unceasingly too. Let us not slack in His service :)

For Good Friday gospel meeting, that God will draw His unconverted elect to His house to hear the gospel of Christ.
Uni students: pray that God will keep them near Him as they are bombarded with truckloads of work and stress.
The elderly and lonely: that God will show Himself even more to these, that they will know Him as their closest Friend
For the NS guys who just POP-ed, that God has brought them through 9wks of BMT safely, for his guiding hand and love towards them. For the guy (aaron) who just enlisted, and for the guy (justin) who will be enlisting in less than a month's time, that God will be with them too.
For the A lvl students that they might make the right decisions, keeping in mind God as their heavenly father and maker. May everything be done for His glory and His alone.
Election: that God may provide suitable men to take up positions as office bearers to serve in our church.

Finally, the long-awaited 'A' Level results will be released to all candidates on 07 Mar, Fri, at 2.30pm.

Let us remember our dear sisters Sharleen, Celestine, Phebe, Julia and Shiyan and our brothers Matthias, Justin, Noah and Aaron as they excitedly/nervously/anxiously receive their result slips.

May the LORD grant them fulfilment in their results, wisdom as they decide upon their future studies, and courage to face all challenges that lie ahead.

This was part of the Lord's Day meditation on Sunday's weekly. Written by Reverend Al Baker.

Puerility -- from the Latin word for boy, puer, thus childishness, silliness, immaturity...

Well then, how does puerility manifest itself in us? I briefly mention five areas.
One is speech. We can be crude, rude, rash, bash, harmful, and cynical.

Do you use puerile speech?

Two is emotions. We can be given over to triviality, jocularity, frivolity, selfishness, and peevishness.

Are you puerile in your emotions?

Three is values. The present, the temporal is everything to children. They cannot think, plan long term. Do you focus on the temporal, failing to consider how your present actions may affect you children next year , ten years from now, in eternity?

Are you puerile in your values?

Four is thinking. Children are excellent receivers of information but poor interpreters of it. So are some adults. They readily receive information about a serious illness, but interpret it incorrectly, thinking it automatically means payback time from God for former sins committed.

Are you puerile in your thinking?

And five is relationships. A child who is hurt by another child tends to push that child away. "He is not my friend anymore." Adults can do the same, moving away from, writing off one who has hurt him, criticized or betrayed him.

Are you puerile in your relationships?

Pastor Lau and Pastor Thomas Chong that God will preserve their lifes (if He wills) that they may continue to further his kingdom even in their weakened state.
Pray for their families as well, its not easy to feel helpless in such situations, pray that God gives them strength and grace to endure trials in this life. Pastor Lau is currently in a High Dependency Ward
Praise God, our friends studying abroad have reached safely there and will be continuing their studies. May God keep them till we meet again.
Pray for the guys in NS that they have time to draw closer to God even though they are in army.
For the spiritually down and out, the sorrowful, that they might seek God for comfort, and God alone.
For extra busy people like uni students, or poly students taking exams, or JC students who are busy all year round, that wisdom may be granted to manage time well, and that they will still faithfully give time to God.
Any personal prayer items you know of.
And of course, thank God for saving us, and sustaining us every single day. Pray for lives lived gratefully and in love of Him.
God willing there will be Lord's Supper next week, pray for the Pastor that administers it, pray for the members that they examine themselves and for those who are not yet members that they eventually will take their baptism or confession of faith.
The working adults, who 'run the rat race', that they may keep their sight on a more important race that is 'set before us' (Hebrews 12:1). May God grant that they will be Christ-focused even in midst of a very competitive, money-career-minded and worldly environment.

Hi all, following is a mail from Greg Nagel of EPCA (correct me if i'm wrong) from Brisbane (Australia);

Dear KSSers,

This is just a short email to to say congratulations on celebrating your 6^th anniversary as a youth group. Truly it is a sign of the Lord's blessing on you as a group, and may you all be able to look back and reflect on His guidance and keeping over the years.

You have been a blessing to many of the youth from our church, myself included. I remember back in 2002 when I planned to visit Singapore for the first time, and started email contact with you guys. I decided to come when I heard about the Youth Retreat (being held where else but Sentosaaaa!) as I thought it would be a great way to get to know you all. Being my first trip, and not knowing the cost of things in Singapore, I planned a budget. "Hmmm..." I thought to myself, "camp fees here are usually several 100 dollars, so I'd better allow for that." What a surprise I was to receive when I read the email flyer about the camp. "Camp fee $10?! Wow! That's a nice round figure for a camp fee :D" Though the camp fee was small, it was no small amount of kindness and friendship which you guys displayed to me during that camp, and during the whole of my time in Singapore, and during my 2 subsequent visits. It was truly heart-warming to witness the desire you displayed during the retreat to really know the Lord's word, and glean guidance from it for your lives. It is my prayer that the Lord would maintain this desire in your hearts, for His glory and your own good and happiness.

Singapore is a fantastic place to visit, with interesting sites, history and culture to learn about, and yes of course cheap food :D But what is most enjoyable for the Christian is the fellowship one can enjoy with like-minded believers over there. The hospitality of you, the youth, truly makes it a memorable and enjoyable time.

So may the Lord continue to bless and keep you all in His paths, as you grow older, so you may all know that true joy that can only by found in Him. He is our Rock, our Fortress and our Strong Tower, the One Who is ever faithful and to Whom we can turn in all life's circumstances and difficulties, as it is He Who from eternity has planned, and brings to pass, all things in our lives, and that sovereignly and for our good.

Pray for Elder Chong as he studies the word of God, that God would grant him wisdom, knowledge and understanding.
Pray for Elder Kwek as he'll be undergoing a nose operation this thursday, that God will guide the hand of the surgeons and grant him speedy recovery.
Thank God for the recent chinese new year, for the time to meet up and have sweet fellowship with loved ones.
Thank God for bring Matthias and Jeremy through field camp, for keeping them and giving them the strength they needed. Thank God for the long cny break for all NS guys, and as they book in again today.
Pray for Jemima as she will be flying back to Melbourne this friday to continue her studies, that she will have a safe journey back and that God will continue to keep her safe as she is far from friends & family.

KSS Regional Cell Groups

This post is lazy-reading-friendly. If you haven't time to read everything, read all the coloured words.

An exciting new development of Kingdom Seekers Seniors, the regional cells. As you all would've probably heard and read somewhere, KSS will be starting regional bible studies coming March. It'll be held every other Wednesday, and we do have a rationale for choosing what may seem to be such an annoyingly inconvenient day-of-the-week -- spiritual refreshment in the middle of the week, when many would need it most. Our "maiden study" will be on the book of Genesis. In the beginning...

(And I am typing this extra early because 1. the church weekly says details can be found on this blog. 2. no excuses for knowing this last minute.)

We will be grouped according to people who live in WEST :( and those in NORTHEAST :)
Here are the details:

WEST - Sojourners - 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month.
5 March: Introduction & Genesis 1:1-13
7.15pm at Serene Centre, proceeding to the old SMU campus.
**The Sojourners have chosen a theme verse Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

NORTHEAST - Refuge - 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.
12 March: Introduction & Genesis 1:1-13
7.15pm at Justin's house (124 Thomson Ridge).

Please do make time for this. Reading and studying the word of God together is important for our spiritual growth, especially when we've been surrounded by and engrossed in our earthly commitments during the week. These bible studies will help to turn our focus on God and align our lives to His standard.

Therefore, take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Praise God for a wonderful 6th Anniversary this past Sunday, and for moulding and guiding KSS thus far.

Praise God for granting Jemima a negative test for Hepatitis C, thus, she can return to Aussie to pursue her medical studies.

Thank God that Elder Chong has started his theological studies. Pray that God grant him strength and fortitude.

Pray for strength, wisdom, and focus for the KSS Committee 2008 as we plan for this year's activities.

Pray for God to watch over those overseas (Julius, Sarah, Clement).

Pray that we will be good testimonies during this Chinese New Year, even as we meet up with unbelieving relatives/friends. For courage and wisdom to witness when the opportunities arise.

KS/KSS will be visiting the Kwek & Lim residences at Bishan/Thomson.

Will Christ not suffice?

THESE words tell us that there is a fulness in Christ. There is a fulness of essential Deity, for "in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead." There is a fulness of perfect manhood, for in Him, bodily, that Godhead was revealed. There is a fulness of atoning efficacy in His blood, for "the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanseth us from all sin." There is a fulness of justifying righteousness in His life, for "there is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus." There is a fulness of divine prevalence in His plea, for "He is able to save to the uttermost them that come unto God by Him; seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them." There is a fulness of victory in His death, for through death He destroyed him that had the power of death, that is the devil. There is a fulness of efficacy in His resurrection from the dead, for by it "we are begotten again unto a lively hope." 1) Remember Pastors Chong and Lau. That God will preserve them and their families, and if it be His will, grant them healing and comfort.
2) Elder Chong, as he undertakes his theological studies. Pray for the pulpit ministry in FERC as well.
3) Bak Wei, as he's away in the UK on holiday: God grant Him journey mercy as he makes his way back to be with us.
4) Aunty Doris, as she continues to be strong in her physical struggles. God be with her and be her comfort as well.
5) Noah, as he just enlisted this past friday (25 Jan). Thank God for keeping Matthias and Jeremy through the 2 weeks of confinement as well. Pray that God bring them through the arduous Field Camp next week too.
6) Thank God for the O/N level results recently released. (Jeremias, Liyan, Serena, Joanne, Joseph, Xinyi)

for those who just entered NS that may God grant them strength not just physically but also spiritually.
for the uni students who are going back to (or are already in) school today that we may be good testimonies for Christ, that may we also trust in Him in whatever courses we are studying.
for those who just found a job that they may find godliness in the workplace that God's name be glorified in all that they do.
for those who are still looking for a job that may they trust in their Shepherd to lead them to the green pasture, to the ever-flowing water.
for those who are spiritually down and/or out, that they will look to the grace of God and grow in love of Him.
for those who just entered JC, for wisdom and guidance in a new and different environment.

Welcome to the new KSS blog! After much distress caused by unexpected modernization (or demodernization) of the blogosphere of which the blogmistress has not much contact with before her new responsibilities necessitated it, I now declare this blog, open :)

To post:
If you are a KSS member (not necessarily a comm member) or UCS or BW, you may gain access into the blog and are granted posting privileges. Please approach me or any other committee members for the username and password. You may post devotions, sharings, reflections, prayer requests, articles, announcements etc onto this blog, as long as it is edifying and useful for the advancement of God's kingdom and KSS' work.

Please note that prayer posts will be labelled under 'prayer' and devotions/sharing will be labelled 'reflection'. Activities will be 'activities' These specified labels are to ensure some organisation and easy navigation around here, please and thank you! Posts that you feel do not fit into any of these 3 categories will be labelled 'misc'.

Oh, unless your life depends on it, abstain from touching the template without informing me! Remember, and do summon your sympathy from deep down your hearts, that much distress has preceded this :S

The old blog will still be there I think. But from the time I manage to let the whole comm know about the opening of this blog onwards, all updates and posts will be uploaded here.
